LAFC won the 2024 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup with a 3-1 extra-time victory over Sporting Kansas City in front of a capacity crowd at BMO Stadium on Sept. 25. Olivier Giroud scored his first-ever goal at BMO Stadium before substitutes Omar Campos and Kei Kamara broke a 1-1 tie with a pair of magnificent goals in extra time to help LAFC lift the Open Cup for the first time in club history!
The Black & Gold began its 2024 Open Cup Odyssey on the road with a Round of 32 match back in May when it made the short trip to face former Division II affiliate Las Vegas Lights. A 3-1 win sent LAFC to the Round of 16 where it beat another USL Championship side - this time at the home confines of BMO Stadium - Loudoun United, 3-0 on May 21.
In the Quarterfinals on July 10, the Black & Gold drew New Mexico United (USLC - Div. II) - once again at home. It was a clash of two sides, who, at the time, were leading their respective conferences. LAFC emerged with a 3-1 win and a ticket to face four-time Open Cup champs, Seattle Sounders, in the Semifinals.
It was LAFC's second ever trip to Open Cup semis but this time the Black & Gold would prevail against a tough opponent playing at their Open Cup fortress - Starfire Sports Complex. Denis Bouanga's late penalty kick goal put LAFC into the tournament Final where the team would author a compelling chapter in the history of the club and the 100-plus year-old competiton.
