The Los Angeles Football Club (LAFC) announced today that the Club has acquired attacker Lee Nguyen from the New England Revolution in exchange for $350,000 in General Allocation Money and $350,000 in Targeted Allocation Money. The trade occurred prior to the close of the Primary Transfer Window on May 1 at 11:59 p.m. CT.
“Lee has been one of the most creative and dynamic players in the league since his arrival in MLS,” said EVP of Soccer Operations and General Manager John Thorrington. “His versatility and ability to score and create goals will certainly benefit our team. We look forward to his immediate contributions on and off the pitch.”
Nguyen, 31, joins LAFC after spending the past six seasons with the Revolution, registering 51 goals and 49 assists in 191 regular season contests (185 starts). In the last four seasons, Nguyen ranks fifth in MLS in combined goals and assists with 82.
In 2014, Nguyen guided the Revs to an MLS Cup appearance after registering 20 goals and eight assists across all competitions. Nguyen would earn Team MVP and MLS Best XI honors and was a finalist for the MLS MVP Award.
“I’m looking forward to working with Lee again,” LAFC head coach Bob Bradley said. “He’s a talented player that will fit in with the football we are building at LAFC.”
The second all-time leading scorer in Revolution history, Ngueyn’s professional career started in 2006, with him joining PSV Eindhoven of the Dutch Eredivisie before making a move to Randers FC of the Danish League in 2008. From 2009-11, Nguyen would play for Hoàng Anh Gia Lai (2009-10) and Becamex Binh Dong (2010-11) of the Vietnamese V-League, tallying 23 goals in 39 appearances.
The McKinney, Texas native represented the U.S. Men’s National Team at the U-18, U-20 and U-23 levels before making his senior debut under current LAFC head coach Bob Bradley in a friendly against China on June 2, 2007. Nguyen has appeared in nine official matches for the USMNT.
