Iceland made Mexico work for it. But in the end, El Tri earned a result.

In a friendly mucked up by a glut of petty fouls and six yellow cards, Marco Fabian opened the scoring for Mexico with a well-placed free kick in the 37th minute.

Carlos Vela, starting on the bench, entered the match in the 59th minute taking the captain's armband from Andrés Guardado. The LAFC forward's introduction provided Mexico with a bit more fluidity going forward, and El Tri took advantage just five minutes after Vela's introduction.

On the break, Hirving Lozano found Miguel Layún and the Sevilla full back angled a low shot into the bottom corner of the Iceland net.

Iceland would come close to cutting Mexico's lead with a shot off the post and later a goal called back for offside, but in the end El Tri would emerge victorious as Layún would find the net once more in the 91st minute to make it 3-0.

The win is Mexico's first of 2018, as it prepares for the 2018 World Cup. El Tri will be in action once again this international break as it takes on Croatia on March 27 in at AT&T Stadium in Arlington.
