The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup returns after a two-year hiatus caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, and the Black & Gold will be making their third appearance in the historic tournament. The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup is the oldest soccer competition in the United States and is an annual tournament open to all United States Soccer Federation (USSF) amateur and professional affiliated soccer teams. This year is the 107th edition of the tournament features a record-setting 103 teams participating, including the defending champions Atlanta United and 25 MLS teams.

LAFC hosts Orange County SC for the first time, as the defending USL Champions are making their ninth appearance in the Open Cup. OCSC defeated the Los Angeles Force (National Independent Soccer Association) 5-2 in the Second Round on April 5 to advance to face the Black & Gold. In 2019, LAFC advanced to the quarterfinals with wins over Real Salt Lake and the San Jose Earthquakes before falling 1-0 to the Timbers in the final eight.
