2017 MLS Expansion Draft 1st Pick: Tyler Miller, goalkeeper from Seattle Sounders

Background

One look at Tyler Miller and it’s obvious he’s a goalkeeper. Standing at a rugged 6-foot-4 with hands that look more like oven mitts, Miller’s physicality immediately made him a hot commodity out of high school. As he proved in four years at Northwestern University, Miller’s post-to-post coverage and razor-quick reactions put him on the U.S. youth national team radar as well as those of multiple MLS clubs. Miller’s a quick study with a natural history of organizational surety along the back. If you play in front of Miller, you’ll know it.

INTERNATIONAL: Miller received his first call-up to the U.S. youth national team system in 2010 with the U18s, and in the interim he’s spent time in camp with both the U20s and the U23s.

OUTSIDE MLS: Miller was drafted by the Sounders in 2015 but almost immediately left to sign for German fourth division side SVN Zweibrücken. Miller made 10 appearances there in 2015 before signing for S2 in the summer.

COLLEGE: By the time Miller left Northwestern, he possessed the school’s all-time record for shutouts with 36 in his four years. As a senior in 2014, he led the Big 10 in goals against average (0.56), save percentage (0.853) and shutouts (9).
