2019 Gold Cup Roundup | Matchday 1

Four LAFC players are away from the squad at this summer's Gold Cup. The tournament featuring 16 teams vying for the right to be considered the top nation in Concacaf kicked off on June 15. And thus far, things have been going pretty well for the Black & Gold and their respective countries.

Let's take a look at how LAFC players faired in Matchday 1:

Mark-Anthony Kaye | Canada

It's the second Gold Cup tournament for Mark-Anthony Kaye in his young career. After featuring for Canada in the 2017 edition of the tournament - in which Bob Bradley became familiar with the midfielder - Kaye is primed for a bigger role in a new-look Canada side.

Starting at left back in Canada's opening match with Martinique at the Rose Bowl, Kaye chipped in an assist in a 4-0 victory. Although not the position we're used to seeing Kaye fill with the Black & Gold, the midfielder was confident on the ball going forward and had a few nice moments linking play with Alphonso Davies on the left side. 

Canada struggled a bit with Martinique playing quick and direct behind the fullbacks, but was able to recover enough to hold the clean sheet. They take on Mexico, undoubtedly  Canada's biggest test in the group, in Matchday 2 in Colorado.

Peter-Lee Vassel | Jamaica

For the first time in tournament history, two matches were held outside of the United States. 

Jamaica had the honor of hosting a Gold Cup match at the National Stadium in Jamaica. And they walked away with a 3-2 win over Honduras.

Peter-Lee Vassell played 76 minutes in midfield for the Reggae Boyz on the night. His corner in the 56th minute found Damion Lowe for Jamaica's third goal of the match. In addition to the assist, Vassell was positive on the ball, taking two shots on goal. 

Jamaica travels to Houston to face El Salvador on June 21 before finishing the group stage at Banc of California Stadium against Curaçao on June 25.

Walker Zimmerman & Tyler Miller | USA

The U.S. Men's National Team rounded out Matchday 1 in Minnesota against Guyana on Tuesday. Walker Zimmerman started and played the full 90 minutes at center back for the Red, White & Blue. While Tyler Miller was available off the bench with Zach Steffen starting at between the posts.

After a largely frustrating first half, the USMNT found a bit of rhythm in the second 45. Tyler Boyd and Gyasi Zardes scored in quick succession to bring the scoreline to 3-0 before the hour mark. Boyd finished his brace in the 81st minute to round out the scoring in a 4-0 victory.

The USMNT travels to Cleveland to take on Trinidad and Tobago, in the first match between the two countries since T&T knocked the US out of World Cup qualifying in 2017, on June 22.
