Los Angeles Football Club  announced today that the Club has transferred midfielder José Cifuentes to Rangers F.C. of the Scottish Premiership.

“Cifu has been an integral part of LAFC’s success over the last three years,” LAFC Co-President & General Manager John Thorrington said. “He has developed into a top midfielder in our league, and we are excited for him to continue the next steps in his career at Rangers.”

Cifuentes, 24, first joined LAFC on Jan. 13, 2020, from América de Quito of Ecuador’s Serie B. In four seasons in Black & Gold, Cifuentes helped lead LAFC to the 2022 Supporters’ Shield and MLS Cup and the 2023 Concacaf Champions League Finals.

A native of Esmeraldas, Ecuador, Cifuentes has 16 senior National Team appearances for Ecuador, including two games in the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Cifuentes also made 19 appearances at U-20 level, helping Ecuador to the 2019 South American Championship and a third-place finish in the U-20 World Cup alongside LAFC teammate Diego Palacios.

Cifuentes proved to be an essential part of LAFC’s midfield, making 102 MLS regular season appearances (78 starts) and registering 14 goals and 20 assists in 7,185 minutes. He is one of just 10 players in MLS history to reach those numbers in their first four seasons before turning 25.

Cifuentes became the fourth player in Club history to reach 100 MLS regular season appearances on July 9, 2023, at BMO Stadium. Overall, Cifuentes made 121 appearances and registered 15 goals and 20 assists across all competitions.

Prior to joining LAFC, Cifuentes spent two seasons with Ecuadorian club CD América. He began his senior career in 2016 with CD Universidad Católica, making his first team debut on July 17 during a 2-2 draw against Fuerza Amarilla. Cifuentes would play in six matches with Universidad Católica before his transfer to CD América.
