Major League Soccer and Twitter will reimagine the sport’s iconic tradition of a post-game jersey swap by honoring fans after every MLS match played on the weekend of May 29. The jersey swap, which will be decided virtually on Twitter, will highlight fans making a positive impact in the community and will feature adidas PRIMEBLUE kits made from recycled ocean plastic.
Beginning today, Thursday, May 20, through Friday, May 28, fans can nominate other fans through Twitter using hashtag #JerseySwapEntry, tagging their club, and including a brief description of why the person should be recognized. Winning fans will be featured in a special way on Twitter and will receive a game-worn jersey.
“We are proud to partner with Twitter to recognize the stories of fans doing amazing things in our communities,” said David Bruce, MLS SVP of Brand and Integrated Marketing. “We are a League defined by our unique supporter culture and this program is a way to honor inspirational fans and to share the positive impact of the MLS soccer community. We are also excited to flip the idea of the jersey swap on its head and find a progressive and unexpected twist with a great partner like Twitter.”
Immediately after each match, clubs will unveil the winners through Twitter. These tweet announcements will be customized based on each club, with fans informed in uniquely special ways. Examples of the tweets include a player holding up the game-worn jersey postgame, a video of the player recognizing the winning fan, a specially curated photo with a message to the fan, and more.
Fans will have an opportunity to purchase adidas PRIMEBLUE jerseys beginning today, May 20, at MLSstore.com or at select stadium retail locations. PRIMEBLUE is a high-performance yarn made with 50% Parley Ocean Plastic—upcycled plastic waste intercepted on shorelines and coastal areas, preventing it from polluting our oceans. MLS and adidas PRIMEBLUE kits are one of the many ways the league raises awareness for environmental issues and helps to create sustainable communities as part of MLS WORKS’ year-long Greener Goals initiative.
