LAFC closes its 2025 preseason with a friendly against reigning Liga MX champions Club América at BMO Stadium in Los Angeles. The match represents a clash of two proud clubs—one young, one old—and two distinct yet connected cultures, as the most decorated team in Mexico visits the metropolis with the largest Mexican population of any city in the United States.

“It's gonna be exciting,” said LAFC midfielder Mark Delgado. “It's gonna be a big game. A lot of our fans and a lot of their fans are gonna be there. We’re definitely looking forward to it.”

As part of LAFC’s ongoing commitment to helping Los Angeles recover from the recent wildfires, a portion of ticket proceeds will be donated to organizations supporting fire relief efforts across the LA community.

The Clubs:

Entering its eighth season in MLS and its fourth under head coach Steve Cherundolo, LAFC is coming off a 2024 campaign that saw the club claim its first U.S. Open Cup trophy, finish first in Major League Soccer’s Western Conference, and reach the conference semifinal round for the third straight season—which no other MLS club has done over the last three years.

Established in 1916, and nicknamed Las Águilas (The Eagles), Club América is one of the founding members of Mexico’s top division and is one of only seven member clubs to have never been relegated.

Club América has won more titles than any other team in Mexican football, including a record sixteen league titles, and seven Concacaf Champions Cup/League titles—more than any other club in North America, Central America, or the Caribbean.

Visitor's Form:

Led by manager André Jardine, Club América recently won its third consecutive Liga MX title by defeating C.F. Monterrey in the 2024 Apertura final in December. América defeated MLS side Columbus Crew in September 2024 to claim the Campeones Cup trophy.

So far this Clausura season América has earned five wins and a tie and sits atop the Liga MX table.

Three weeks ago, América played a friendly against Inter Miami in Las Vegas, which ended in a 2-2 draw and a 3-2 Miami advantage in penalty kicks.

Budding Rivalry

Tuesday’s matchup marks the third time the two clubs’ have met. LAFC defeated América in the 2020 Concacaf Champions League semifinals, which made LAFC the first MLS club in history to defeat three Liga MX sides en route to the Concacaf final. When LAFC and América met in the 2022 Leagues Cup Showcase, a friendly match played at SoFi Stadium in Aug. 2022, the outcome was a 2-2 draw and a seven-round penalty shootout won by the visitors.

Welcome Back Brian

Club América winger Brian Rodríguez, 24, played for LAFC from 2019 to 2022, appearing in 55 regular-season matches and registering eight goals and 12 assists for the Black & Gold. He helped LAFC capture the 2019 Supporters’ Shield and appeared in four matches during LAFC’s historic Concacaf run in 2020. Rodríguez signed with América in August 2022.

Last week Rodríguez scored two goals in América’s 4-0 win over FC Juarez on Feb. 1.

Other Players to Watch

Winger Alejandro Zendejas, born in Ciudad Juarez and raised across the border in El Paso, Texas, is a former FC Dallas homegrown player who has tallied either a goal or an assist in three Liga MX appearances in 2025.

LAFC winger Denis Bouanga was one of just two MLS players to record 20 regular-season goals and 10 assists last year. (The other was Lionel Messi.) This year Bouanga seeks to become the first player in MLS history to amass three straight 20-goal seasons.

Forward Olivier Giroud and goalkeeper Hugo Lloris won the 2018 FIFA World Cup as members of France’s national team. Lloris has earned more caps than any French player in history and Giroud leads Les Bleus in career goals. Last year, Lloris was named an MLS All Star and Giroud scored a goal in both of LAFC’s finals appearances (U.S. Open Cup and Leagues Cup).

LAFC begins its 2025 season on the road against the Colorado Rapids in Concacaf Champions Cup action on Feb. 18. The Black & Gold opens MLS regular-season play on Feb. 22 against Minnesota United at BMO Stadium. Season ticket information. Single-game ticket info.
